A Return to Warmer Weather?

Our thermometer has read 48 degrees today, the warmest it has been in quite a while.  The snow has started to melt, and the icicles on the back of the house drip, drip, dripped all through the morning, and finally fell down when the sun shone directly onto them in the afternoon.  And the snow [...]

Snow Day

We had something of a snow day today.  Not because we couldn’t travel to school on account of the snow, but because we got a kind of late start due to sending the older kids out to shovel.  I don’t know the official count, but it looked like close to eight inches of snow.  Glad [...]

Early Spring?

Well, I heard yesterday that here in Lander our groundhog did not see his shadow on February 2nd, thus supposedly predicting an early spring, as opposed to six more weeks of winter.  That would certainly be great, although I’m not sure what an early spring would mean, since six more weeks would put us only [...]

Winter Solstice

Today was the winter solstice.  That means that we have passed the longest night of the year (at fifteen hours) now!  From here on out we get more and more daylight each day. That’s a happy thought!

Jumping Back In

Well, obviously trying to catch up with everything that’s happened since I last posted is hopeless, so I guess I will just skip all that and pick up where we are.  The perfectionist in me hates to do that, but on the other hand it seems better than just giving up, which is the other [...]

Laundry Notes

Well, I’ve been conducting an informal study over the last week or so, and have figured out that laundry will still dry on the line even when it is so humid outside that it might as well be a sauna (90 degrees and 75% humidity).  I haven’t even noticed it taking any longer than usual, [...]

Cold Snap

The temperature was all the way down to 50 degrees this morning!  In April!  We actually had to close the windows, not so we could turn on the A/C, but to keep that chilly air out.  Wow.

Seasonal shift already

Well, that was a pleasant, if short, springtime.  Admittedly it is still technically springtime, but practically speaking it is now summer here in Florida.  Hot.  Humid.  Frequent (not quite daily yet) rains.  Fewer cars on the roads.  Only one more week and our 7:00 a.m. Tridentine Mass will be back at 8:00!  I really enjoyed [...]

Signs of Spring in Florida

Spring is a little different here than it was up North. Here, the robins disappear when it gets to be spring. We do still have plenty of birds in the yard going through their courting rituals, and gathering grass for nest-making, but at least at this point they are mostly raucous black grackles. No melting [...]
